On DVD this week: A Fantastic Captain, the Nerve of Emma Roberts, and the Return of Eddie Murphy

By Christian DiMartino

Here are some movies coming out on DVD this week:

  • Captain Fantastic: Viggo Mortensen doesn’t show up to many movies, but when he does, it’s usually something of a gift. Case in point: Captain Fantastic. His performance here really lives up to the title. The movie around him almost does too. I admit it took a minute for it to grow on me, but when it finally did, I’m glad it did. (3.5 stars)
  • Lights Out: Lights Out is sort of a mixed bag. It can feel creative one minute, and redundant the next. But yet here and there it’s got some truly chilling moments, and it features strong work from Teresa Palmer and Maria Bello. (2.5 stars)
  • Mr. Church: Mr. Church marks the return of Eddie Murphy, and I’ll say there’s both good news and bad news. The good news is that Murphy is marvelous in the title role. He reminds us of his genius. The bad news is that the movie around him doesn’t really deserve him. It’s very well meaning and harmless, but yet from its opening minutes you just know that it’s all way too sentimental. But hopefully Murphy is back to stay. (2 stars)
  • Nerve: A pleasant surprise. Here I thought Nerve was gonna be one of the worst movies of the year. But yet it’s a film that, for the most part, worked. Yeah it has its glitches and its premise can feel like a stretch here and there, but Nerve is mindless fun and proud of it. (2.5 stars)
