On DVD This Week: Two Fine, Two Dreadful

By Christian DiMartino

Here are some of the movies on DVD this week:

  • Bad Moms: Who actually expected Bad Moms to be good? Not I. But I actually had a good enough time here, despite a few jokes that didn’t quite stick and the occasional cliche (and the awful soundtrack). Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, Kristen Bell, and Christina Applegate all had a movie to sell, and I’d say they did it well enough. (2.5 stars)
  • Nine Lives: Barry Sonnenfeld’s Nine Lives can really be summarized by a Taylor Swift lyric: I knew you were trouble when I walked in (okay, I paraphrased). Still though, there wasn’t a chance in hell that this film was going to work, and as expected, nothing about this film works. Not even the brilliant two time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey can make this film even remotely enjoyable. I hear the Razzie calling. (Zero Stars)
  • Star Trek BeyondStar Trek Beyond isn’t quite as good as the films that came before it, but it’s still a solid, fun outing that is also somewhat playful when it comes to the characters. I’m not really sure what the evil plot is here. But hey, it’s a great looking film nonetheless. (3 stars)
  • The Sea of Trees: Gus Van Sant’s The Sea of Trees was booed at the Cannes Film Festival back in 2015, and was pretty much shelved until this year. And with good reason. The film is a ridiculous, kind of hilarious, sappy, cheesy, and Nicolas Sparks-ish bore, in which not even Matthew McConaughey can save. One of these days, someone will make a  good movie about the suicide forest. Maybe. (1 star)
